About Me
When I was 3 or 4 my parents used to tie me to a small anchor in the
back yard so I wouldn’t get away. One day, they heard a knock on the
back door. “Who on earth would be at the back door”? It was me. I had
carried the anchor to the back door and wanted in. I was
never content
to accept the status quo (I was walking at 9 months).
The wider world drew me as a teenager. At 18, Tina and I got on a
train,
passed through the farm where I grew up and three days later were on
the other side of the country looking for work (we still have
the trunk that contained our music and clothes!). Since that time, we've moved 13 more times. Being curious is not an
attitude I need to cultivate – I live there. For me, it’s
always been natural to do what Alvin Toffler talked about 30 years ago.
In the future, he
said, people will have to “learn,
unlearn and relearn”
on a continual basis. I often feel like a boy running so fast
that I'm tripping over myself.
I gravitate to global perspectives, but also really like
drilling down to
the concrete, tactical issues to get things done.
One of my most interesting work / life experiences was in Senegal, West
Africa for seven years. What's
it like to
travel back in time to another planet?
At mid-life, I enrolled as an
external
student of the London School of Economics and earned a BSc.
Politics and International Relations.
Contrary to what some people believe about the effectiveness of a
social sciences degree today, Peter Drucker held that management
education today should put “far more
emphasis on government, society, history and the political process”
I am an independent consultant for Birkman
International and a
certified affiliate for 5
Dynamics and an Associate member of Families
in Global Transition.
My philosophy
and emphasis
In a nutshell - two things:
- It can always be better!
- Find your own voice!
This is a life long process. It involves each other. It especially means that more powerful people need to
enable others to act.
In a phrase, it's about - People,
Change, Potential.
But how does it happen? Only by having
real conversations. Only by moving
beyond a mere instrumental connection to each other. To be human, we
must go off script sometimes, and play with our roles more. Use them
and not be abused by them. This is often messy and sometimes we step on
each others toes - or worse. But what’s the alternative?
Sweeping differences under the rug, whispering, pretending, withering.
Auto pilot and imprisonment.
I focus on individuals
and the workplace (teams). Work is a key social
context. It’s where individual, physical, mental, spiritual, and bottom
lines intersect. Over 50% of our entire lives are spent inside work
organizations.
Let’s Set a New Direction
– from funk to focus; from cog to human; from
staring at a single bottom line to a bigger picture.
