About Brad

When I was 3 or 4 my parents used to tie me to a small anchor
in the
back yard so I wouldn't get away. One day, they heard a knock on the
back door. "Who on earth would be at the back door"? It was me. I had
carried the anchor to the back door and wanted in.
Change-oriented back then, I was
never content
to accept the status quo (I was walking at 9 months).
The wider world drew me as a teenager. At 18, Tina and I got on a
train,
passed through the farm where I grew up and three days later were on
the other side of the country looking for work (we still have
the trunk that contained our music and clothes!). Since that time,
we've lived and worked in 13 other places including Missouri
and the edge of the Sahara
Desert. Being
curious is not an
attitude I need to cultivate – I live there. For me, it's
always been natural to do what Alvin Toffler talked about 30 years ago.
In the future, he
said, people will have to "learn,
unlearn and relearn"
on a continual basis. I often feel like a boy running so fast
that I'm tripping over myself.
I gravitate to global perspectives, but also like
drilling down to
the concrete, tactical issues to get things done.
At mid-life, I enrolled as a student of the London School of Economics
and earned a BSc.
Politics and International Relations speciallizing
in
globalization and organizations. Contrary to what some people believe
about the effectiveness of a
social sciences degree today, Peter Drucker held that management
education today should put "far more
emphasis on government, society, history and the political process". I
totally agree. At the present time, in addition to delivering Team
Development Workshops, I am taking a Human
Resources Management Program at Lambton College.
I am an independent consultant for Birkman
International, a
certified affiliate for 5
Dynamics and an Associate member of Families
in Global Transition.
My philosophy
and emphasis
In a nutshell - two things:
- Find your Voice!
- Better Together!
This is a life long process. It involves each other all along
the way. Leaders have a responsibility to
enable others to act.
One phrase captures my life and work: People,
Change, Potential
©
My workshops focus on
individuals
and the
team context. You can't separate
them. Work is the key social
context today. Ours is a business civilization. At work
individual, physical, mental, spiritual, and bottom
lines intersect. Over 50% of our entire lives are spent here.
It can be much better too. But only by having
real conversations. By moving
beyond a mere instrumental connection to each other. To be human, we
must go off script sometimes, and modify
with our roles here and there. Use them
and not be abused by them. This can be messy at times and will take us
into
unknown spaces. But what's the alternative?
Here are some: Sweeping Differences under the Rug. Pretending.
Withering. Losing Business. Mission Creep. Auto pilot, Ego pilot, Cog or Cannon Fodder.
